* I doubt that beer mugs and song lyrics represent a wider culture of rape so much as they represent a wider culture of irresponsible idiocy. Otherwise, what do we make of the women on the video singing the "YOUNG" song? Were they longing to be victims? Are they rape minded lesbians? Or just young people not thinking clearly (alcohol, maybe?) before doing something reprehensibly stupid?
* I definitely think they represent a wider culture that turns a blind eye to misogyny, sexual harassment, objectification and, yes, even rape. We may not openly condone rape but we encourage men to dance on the line between consent and no consent all the time; just look at all the characters in the media that are revered for lying to girls in order to sleep with them. We celebrate men who are able to dance right on the line between coercion and consent but as soon as they cross that line we act as if we are outraged. Not that individuals are not responsible for their own actions, but I think we need to take good long look at the role our society plays in creating a culture of rape.
I am a student at Memorial and both my brother and boyfriend, as well as many of my friends, have been or are part of the engineering faculty. What is perhaps more disturbing than the fact that the image was ever printed on the mugs int eh first place (one can maybe chalk it up to a moment of bad judgement... maybe...) has been the reaction to the mugs. Most of the commentary online has been that everyone is overreacting to a funny, lighthearted, teenage joke. This really demonstrates just how disturbingly widespread these attitudes are. This is not a teenage joke. The fact that girls were involved does not make it less sexist. Imagine first year girls (and hopefully guys too would be offended by such a "joke") going into a party where they are supposed to feel welcomed and included. The message? Sexualize and objectify yourself and you are welcome here. Be a real, whole, strong, intelligent woman and get out.
* I think it's educational. School tends to gloss over the fact that the world is run by childish imbeciles who got their jobs by lying, cheating, and stabbing people in the back, in many cases their own friends. Better to get used to it while you're still in school.
* Give it a rest already with the sexism stuff. Men and Women have casual sex in university as they do in their 30s, 40s, 50s and I assume 60's and they talk about it like that and the women are as sexually outgoing as the men - in my limited experience I find women more outgoing and explicit than men. This mug has nothing to do with the rape stuff from other stories nor is it anything like the rape stories it is about sex between men and women so let it go. If you don't like the mug don't buy it! fffff I am so tired with us going overboard on the sexism, racism, reverse racsim, sexual gender, sexual preference - the politically correct world is going to turn us into uncaring, unresponsive zombies.
* Again, we pay all of this money to educate ourselves or our kids and this is what they allow as acceptable in today's times. Should these folks really be controlling our youths minds when they don't have enough common sense to use theirs. It is in most schools and it has been going on forever.
* This is really getting ridiculous! A beer mug, fercrissakes? Some people need to give their collective heads a shake.
